SIFU JESPER & SIFU CHAN HING GWAN SEMINAR UCT ACADEMY AMSTERDAM

Datum: 14/06/2025 - 15/06/2025
Locatie: Amsterdam

Some Background Information (in English):

Yuen Chai Wan Wing Chun
Most of the Wing Chun practiced in the Western world today descends from the very famous
Kung Fu master Yip Man and many believe he was the leading authority and undisputed
grandmaster of the style. However, this is not accurate – in fact, Yip Man was just one of a

handful of Wing Chun practitioners, who thanks to his immensely popular and very famous
student, movie star Bruce Lee, became known to the wider public.
In his native hometown of Fatsaan in Mainland China, Yip Man alongside fellow Wing Chun
masters Yiu Choi and Yuen Kei Saan, was one of the so-called “Wing Chun Saam Hou” (The
Three “Heroes” of Wing Chun”) All three have descendants who still practice and preserve
what they have learned, in fact most of the very many Wing Chun branches can ultimately be
traced back to one of these three masters.
However, there are some exceptions – one of these is the Wing Chun style of Master Yuen
Chai Wan, who was the older brother of Yuen Kei Saan, and the first teacher of the
aforementioned Yiu Choi. Yuen Chai Wan was a very accomplished martial arts master and
senior to the “Heroes”.
In the early 1930s he went to Vietnam and taught martial arts there, founding what is today
known as “Vietnamese Wing Chun”, which is getting more and more well-known because of
the many videos its practitioners post on internet platforms such as Youtube and Facebook.
However, as is the case with the schools descending from Yip Man, there is great variability
in what has been passed on to the present day. This means that all Wing Chun out of Vietnam
is not the same.
One of the students Yuen Chai Wan taught in Vietnam was Master Wan Haang Gin, a native
of Naamhoi, Guangdong, China, who had relocated to Hanoi. Eventually, Wan Sifu moved to
Gwongsai province where he became a bodyguard for a very famous local General and
eventually ended up in Guangzhou. Here he passed on what he head learned from Yuen Chai
Wan to a small group of disciples, the only one alive and still teaching being Master Chan
Hing Gwan.

The Master Chan Hing Gwan
Master Chan started learning from his Sifu as a teenager in 1966 and has been actively
practicing since then. According to his Sifu\s wishes, he started passing on the style of Yuen
Chai Wan in 1975 and today he is one of the very, very few masters teaching the art outside
of Vietnam to a small but dedicated group of enthusiasts in Guangzhou, China.
He has been featured in several serious, high quality works on Southern Chinese Wing Chun
and recognized as an authority of the authentic martial art of Yuen Chai Wan among his peers
in Vietnam and abroad as well as the local general martial arts community.

The Style
The Yuen Chai Wan style passed on by Master Chen is a extremely practical and effective
method, aiming to incapacitate the opponent as quickly as possible – ruthless and vicious.
In order to achieve this, it emphasizes cultivating and implementing certain concepts and
strategies, for example:
 Ying Siu Bouh Faat
– using footwork and body positioning to defeat the enemy
 Heng Kiu Heui Sau, Chung Kiu Lau Chung
– if the opponent is weak, we strike through his attack; if he is strong, use a soft but heavy hand to stop his attack
 Chung Sai
– ignoring the superficial, attacking the core
Other essentials of the style comprise of refraining from using raw strength to overpower the
opponent but to make use of trained, coordinated power to defeat him as quickly and
decisively as possible, and to focus on attacking particularly vulnerable targets – among
others.

Of course all of this should sound familiar to all Wing Chun practitioners, however the Devil
is in the detail and more often than not the same words have a very different meaning to
different people. The best way to find out and appreciate these details is always personal
experience.
The system contains a multitude of very effective training methods to specifically develop the
skills, qualities and abilities necessary to apply the various concepts in real fighting – basic
skill training, forms, wooden dummy training, weapons training, supplementary training, etc.

The Seminar:
We are very happy to present all Western martial arts enthusiasts interested in expanding
their Gong Fu-horizon with the opportunity to learn about this extremely rare style from one
of the most prominent and accomplished senior masters of the style around today.
During the seminar Master Chan will teach various aspects of his style to give an idea of its
flavour and feel – an introduction to the martial arts legacy of the great Wing Chun ancestor
Yuen Chai Wan.
