Start Strong After the Summer: Improve Your Body & Mind with Martial Arts at UCT
Summer holidays are a wonderful time to relax, travel and step away from your normal routine. But when the holidays are over, September also offers something else: the perfect opportunity for a fresh start.
At UCT Academies Amsterdam and Almere, we believe martial arts can play an important role in both physical and mental health. Whether you want to become fitter, stronger and more confident, reduce stress, learn practical self-defence or simply challenge yourself with something new, martial arts offers much more than just exercise.
And this new season is particularly special, because UCT is expanding its program with new classes in Wu Taiji Quan.
Why martial arts after the summer holidays?
After weeks of holidays, late dinners, travelling and perhaps a little less exercise than usual, many people feel the need to get back into a healthy rhythm.
You could simply go to the gym. But martial arts combines physical training with learning a skill.
Every class challenges coordination, mobility, balance, strength, endurance and reaction speed. At the same time, you have to concentrate, solve problems and interact with a training partner.
That combination makes martial arts interesting for people who want to work on both body and mind.
Training also gives structure to your week. Instead of telling yourself that you “really should start exercising again,” you have a class, teachers, training partners and something new to learn every week.
And perhaps most importantly: training should be enjoyable.
At UCT we take martial arts seriously, but that doesn’t mean we have to take ourselves seriously all the time. A friendly atmosphere, humour and enjoying the journey are an important part of our academies.
NEW at UCT: Wu Taiji Quan
This season brings an exciting addition to UCT: Wu Taiji Quan classes.
Taiji is sometimes associated only with slow and graceful movement, but behind those movements lies a sophisticated Chinese martial art.
Wu Taiji develops posture, balance, relaxation, coordination, sensitivity and efficient whole-body movement. Instead of relying purely on muscular strength, students learn how structure, timing, connection and relaxation can produce surprisingly effective movement.
This makes Wu Taiji particularly interesting for people who want to improve their body awareness and movement quality while exploring the deeper principles of traditional Chinese martial arts.
It can also complement harder or faster martial arts training beautifully.
The new Wu Taiji classes at UCT offer both existing martial artists and complete beginners an opportunity to discover this fascinating internal martial art.
UCT Wing Chun – practical Chinese Kung Fu
Wing Chun Kung Fu has been at the heart of UCT for many years.
Our approach to Wing Chun focuses on understanding how the system can actually be applied. Students develop efficient body mechanics, positioning, timing, footwork, striking, sensitivity and the ability to function at close range.
Training includes the traditional forms and exercises of Wing Chun, but always with an eye toward their practical purpose.
For us, Wing Chun isn’t about collecting techniques. It’s about developing attributes.
As your experience grows, you learn to move more efficiently, recognize opportunities earlier and remain calmer under pressure. That combination makes UCT Wing Chun in Amsterdam and Almere suitable both for people interested in traditional Kung Fu and those looking for practical self-defence.
UCT Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – learn to solve problems under pressure
Few martial arts demonstrate the value of technique and strategy as clearly as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).
BJJ is essentially a physical form of problem solving. Your training partner presents you with a constantly changing situation and you have to find the appropriate answer.
Students develop grappling skills, positional control, escapes and submissions while simultaneously improving fitness, strength, coordination and resilience.
At UCT Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Amsterdam, we place great importance on technical development and a safe, friendly training environment.
Competition can be part of BJJ, but it doesn’t have to be your reason for training. You can simply train because you enjoy learning, want to become fitter or appreciate the challenge of improving your skills.
UCT Escrima – understanding weapons and realistic self-defence
UCT Escrima adds another dimension to martial arts training.
Escrima originates from the Filipino martial arts and develops coordination, timing, distance, footwork and awareness through training with weapons and empty-hand applications.
At UCT, our Escrima training has a strong connection with practical self-defence, including understanding the dangers involved when weapons are present.
This is an important distinction.
Real self-defence is not about pretending that a dangerous situation is easy to control. It is about developing awareness, understanding distance and recognizing just how quickly circumstances can change.
UCT Escrima offers a fascinating training method for students interested in weapon-based martial arts and practical self-protection.
Jing Wu Kids – martial arts and self-defence for children
Children perhaps benefit even more from martial arts training than adults.
Our Jing Wu Kids program has become one of UCT’s most successful programs and is specifically designed to introduce children to martial arts and self-defence in an age-appropriate way.
Of course children learn physical skills, but the bigger picture is equally important.
We want them to develop confidence, coordination, discipline, concentration, resilience and respect.
A good children’s martial arts class should challenge children without taking away the fun. They should leave class feeling that they learned something, accomplished something and can’t wait to come back.
Over the years we’ve seen children begin their martial arts journey with us at a very young age and eventually progress into adult training. That long-term development is something we value enormously.
For parents searching for kids martial arts, Kung Fu or children’s self-defence in Amsterdam or Almere, Jing Wu Kids offers a structured program in which personal development and martial arts go hand in hand.
One academy, different paths
One of the strengths of UCT is that martial arts doesn’t have to mean the same thing for everybody.
Some students fall in love with the technical precision of Wing Chun. Others prefer the grappling and physical chess game of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Some are fascinated by the weapon skills and self-defence concepts of Escrima, while others are drawn toward the internal mechanics and refined movement of our new Wu Taiji classes.
And our youngest students can begin their journey through Jing Wu Kids.
Different arts. Different approaches. But a shared purpose:
to become healthier, more skilful, more confident and more capable than you were yesterday.
Mental health is also about having something to look forward to
Modern life can be mentally demanding. Work, phones, social media and constant information compete for our attention throughout the day.
Martial arts training gives you a period in which you have to be present.
When somebody is standing in front of you throwing punches, trying to pass your guard or working a training drill with you, thinking about tomorrow’s emails suddenly becomes rather difficult.
For an hour or two, your attention returns to your breathing, movement, training partner and immediate environment.
That mental reset is one of the reasons many people continue martial arts long after their original fitness goals have been achieved.
You come for the martial arts.
You often stay for the people, the challenge and the way training makes you feel.
Make this season your fresh start
The end of the summer holidays doesn’t have to mean simply returning to work, school and the usual routine.
It can also mean starting something new.
Whether you’re searching for martial arts in Amsterdam, martial arts in Almere, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Escrima, Wu Taiji, self-defence training or martial arts for children, UCT offers different ways to begin your journey.
You don’t need to be fit before you start.
You don’t need martial arts experience.
And you certainly don’t need to be “good” at it on your first day.
You simply have to start.
